Wendy Brotherton
BA, Chemistry, Berea College
PhD, Organic Chemistry, Florida State University
Dr. Wendy Brotherton joined Midway in 2022 and serves as an Assistant Professor of Chemistry in the Department of Science and Mathematics. Additionally, she serves as Chemical Hygiene Officer to the University. Dr. Brotherton teaches Principles of Chemistry, General Chemistry I and II, Organic Chemistry I and II, and Biochemistry.
Dr. Brotherton's research interest lies in the areas of organic/bioorganic chemistry. When she was a postdoctoral fellow at Carnegie Mellon University, she developed a bichromophoric Forster resonance energy transfer (FRET) 1,2,3-triazole-linked system that displayed no FRET signal when in aqueous solution but when placed in a viscous solvent or bound to a fluorogen activating protein (FAP), a dramatic increase in signal was observed. Her graduate work at FSU focused on investigation of the chelation properties of the N2 of the 1,2,3-triazole ring which led to the development of additive free, copper(II) alkyne-azyde cycloaddition (AAC) conditions.
